"Gas guzzler" congestion charge rise to £25
Drivers of 4x4 and other large vehicles were left reeling after hearing the Mayor plans to increase their congestion charge to £25, more than 3 times the current amount.
Mr. Livingstone is set to introduce a "sliding scale" whereby smaller, less polluting cars are offered a discount and larger motors are charged more. These increases are due to be in place by 2008 and 2010 respectively.
The obvious reason for the increases being pollution caused by the many cars in our capital.
The scheme in principal is a good idea and something that should be supported, providing cars with low CO2 emissions are rewarded appropriately. However, this and other efforts to reduce emissions are in danger of having little impact if they are not supported by drastic improvements to London's ailing tube and bus network. Summer temperatures have hit an all time high on the underground. How likely is it that wealthy owners of Chelsea tractors will swap their air conditioned rides for this?

This is a good move, something needed to be done about the huge amount of 4 wheel drives being driven by a single person.

What a idotic thing to do!! Ken is such a sad person that he is spending ALL his energy on 4x4!. How about spending some more energy on the decrepit tube system?? How about some hefty fines for the tube bosses for every engineering overrun on Mondays??? Ken FOCUS! Also, how about his congestion charging vans that read license plate and leave their engines running ALL day????? How about going after all those limousines blocking parking spaces for genuine parkers who then have to circle around and hence pollute more because all these Bentley's, Merc's etc are blocking parking bays WITHOUT paying for them!!! Who on earth ever voted for Ken??

This is not a good move, it is completely outrageous.
Cars with larger engine sizes use more fuel, and as such, pay vastly more in fuel duties (about 75% of the cost of fuel). Why should they be taxed AGAIN merely for driving a bigger car? If anything, the fuel taxes are the ultimate in pay-as-you-drive charges.
Lets get rid of this lying, hypocritical, racist mayor.

Love the reply about why not sort out the Tube. Ken objected to the tube contracts, Ken did not have control of the tube before the contract were signed. Ken cannot just start fining the companies if the contract does not allow.
Nevermind the facts though.
